SENATOR JOSEPH KYRILLOS LEADS HONOREES AT NY/NJ BAYKEEPER'S 15th ANNUAL CLAMBAKE

September 23, 2011 - NJ State Senator Joseph Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) will receive the Spirit of Baykeeper award at the NY/NJ Baykeeper’s 15th Annual Clambake on September 25, 2011 on the chapel grounds of Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook, NJ. The Senator is receiving this award for his commitment to the NY/NJ Harbor and in particular his work with NY/NJ Baykeeper’s oyster research and restoration project.

“We are honored to recognize Senator Kyrillos’ commitment to our work. His non-partisan approach to environmental issues benefits all of the 22 million residents of the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary,” says NY/NJ Baykeeper, Deborah A. Mans. "Senator Kyrillos has been a steadfast advocate for Baykeeper's oyster restoration and research in the Raritan Bay - championing our work with the Administration and helping facilitate a solution that allowed us to resume our research at NWS Earle in Middletown. He has also been instrumental in the future preservation of a key natural area in Aberdeen, Monmouth County."

Since 1989, NY/NJ Baykeeper has served as the citizen advocate for the bays, streams and shores of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary—stopping polluters, championing public access, influencing land use decisions, educating the public, and preserving and restoring habitat. Baykeeper remains committed to continuing the three core programs that have driven its work over the years: the Policy and Advocacy Program, which seeks to shape and enforce water quality, land use, and coastal policies that impact the Estuary; the Conservation Program, which preserves remaining habitat and open space throughout the Estuary through the identification, acquisition, and restoration of endangered sites; and the Oyster Restoration Program, which creates new oyster beds in order to both monitor and improve the health of the Estuary’s ecosystem.

Joining Senator Kyrillos in being honored by NY/NJ Baykeeper are: Suzanne Mattei (former Region 2 Director, New York State Department of Environmental Protection), Monmouth Conservation Foundation, Sarah Chasis (Senior Attorney- Director, Ocean Initiative, Natural Resource Defense Council), and Bart Chezar (Bay Ridge Flats Oyster Project).

KYRILLOS RECOGNIZED FOR SPONSORING TOUGH LEGISLATION THAT WOULD CURB APPEARANCES SUCH AS SNOOKI OF "JERSEY SHORE" AT RUTGERS

Bloomfield, NJ - The Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition, a nationwide coalition of anti-bias activists, said it is honoring New Jersey State Senator Joseph Kyrillos for his tough stance on “Jersey Shore” and for sponsoring a measure giving College students a choice for student-planned events that carry fees such as the infamous appearance by a member of the TV show at Rutgers earlier this year.

The presentation of the group’s first-ever “Una Voce” award, given to individuals who defend the Italian heritage, will be made to Kyrillos (R-Monmouth/Middlesex), who sponsored (S2843) which would give students the option of whether they wish to pay for these types of events.

Regarding “Jersey Shore’s” Snooki who was paid $32,000 for her appearance at Rutgers, Kyrillos told The Star-Ledger in April: "Students ought not to be forced to fund entertainment or events that they find objectionable.  There were great deals of Rutgers students who I am certain were uninterested or flat out outraged by Ms. Polizzi's appearance on campus." Kyrillos described Snooki as "…a degenerate reality television star who offers neither useful advice nor any appreciable talents."

Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition President Andre’ DiMino lauded Kyrillos for his courage in taking on MTV, and for sponsoring legislation that would give students a say in whether they wish to pay fees for such events at their schools.  “Senator Kyrillos’ quick and courageous action in standing up to bias and stereotyping sets the example for other legislators to follow,” DiMino said. “We are proud to honor him with our inaugural ‘Una Voce’ award.”

The Italian American ONE VOICE Coalition is marshaling its forces to launch a first-ever, nationwide “Rapid Response” team and multimedia effort aimed at fighting discrimination and defending Italian American heritage.  The plans will be presented at a kickoff dinner on June 29th at 7 p.m. that all are welcome to attend.

During the presentation, DiMino and ONE VOICE members will discuss the current onslaught of stereotyping of Italian Americans in all media, including reality shows, talk shows, newspapers, magazines, movies and more.  DiMino will also reveal plans for the first-ever, nationwide “Rapid Response” team of defenders of Italian American Heritage, and efforts to build a legal and social network system and more.

ONE VOICE differs from all other Italian American groups in that its sole focus and objective is to fight bias, stereotyping and discrimination against Italian Americans.  It is the only national Italian American organization with this mandate.  ONE VOICE’s stated mission is to “…secure the rightful representation of Americans of Italian origin and of all peoples whose paths toward social equality have been impeded.  The powers of intellect, wisdom and due process of law will be brought to bear on all inequities.”

SEN. KYRILLOS RECEIVES COASTAL AND OCEAN LEADERSHIP AWARD

MIDDLETOWN — Senator Joe Kyrillos (R-13) today was awarded the Coastal and Ocean Leadership Award by the Monmouth University Urban Coastal Institue.

“It is an honor to be recognized the Urban Coastal Institute, an organization dedicated to the preservation of our precious coastal resources in Monmouth County and all along the New Jersey shoreline,” said Senator Kyrillos. “As a lifelong New Jersey resident, I am keenly aware of how important our waterfront is to the state’s economy and our way of life. During my career in public service, I’ve worked hard with the Monmouth County delegation and others to ensure that state government does all it can to preserve and protect this environmental gem for generations to come.”

Senator Kyrillos was presented this award at the Urban Coast Institute’s Future of the Ocean Symposium. Also recognized at the event were Dr. Carl Sarafina, who received the Champion of the Ocean Award, John Wnek, recipient of the Marine Educator of the Year Award, and Steve Zeck, who was named Volunteer of the Year.

Senator Kyrillos has a long record of fighting for coastal preservation in the State Assembly and Senate. KYRILLOS RECEIVES AWARD FROM NJ APARTMENT ASSOCIATION

Senator Joseph Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) received the "Housing Champion of the Year" Award today from the New Jersey Apartment Association. Upon receiving the award, Kyrillos gave a speech to the members about the importance of the rental housing industry and highlighted the fact that one in three people in New Jersey rent, rather than own their homes.

"Policy makers must remember that the economic decisions that we discuss in Trenton, land use, taxation and transportation impact renters and the providers of rental housing as much, as those living in single family homes," explained Kyrillos. "Policy makers must not continue to view rental housing separately from any other issue. We must examine the consequences of our actions on every sector of the economy including the housing sector as a whole."

Senator Kyrillos has been a leading advocate of the housing industry and its impact on the future of New Jersey's economic success.

"The housing sector in particular is vitally important to our future prosperity," Kyrillos concluded. "Building modern, environmentally friendly, affordable rental housing will have a two fold impact on our economy. First the construction of the buildings will immediately employ thousands in the trades and ancillary industries. Secondly the influx of a talented, motivated workforce will continue the economic expansion through the additional commerce that will naturally follow."

KYRILLOS NAMED 'LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR'

Senator Joseph Kyrillos (R-Monmouth) was recently named "Legislator of the Year" by the New Jersey Conference of Mayors, a statewide organization that represents the interests of mayors and the towns they serve. Senator Kyrillos was chosen for his work on property tax reform, job creation and environmental protection.

"The mayors of our communities are on the front lines every day listening and working with people so that our neighborhoods can be great places to live, work and raise a family," Kyrillos stated. "It is a great honor to be recognized by a group who does so much good for the betterment of all of New Jersey."

Senator Kyrillos has been at the forefront of numerous public policy issues including the redevelopment of Fort Monmouth, updating the shore protection plan and promoting eco-tourism throughout the state.

"A great deal has been accomplished, but more work needs to be done," Kyrillos continued. "With Governor Chris Christie's leadership New Jersey is one again headed in the right direction. We are cutting state bureaucratic excesses, making state spending more transparent and giving municipalities the tools they need to rein in property taxes."

"Mayors today, have more responsibility than ever before to find efficiencies and economies of scale and I am confident that they are up to the challenge. I look forward to continuing my partnership with the mayors, small business owners and residents of New Jersey to make our state more affordable, more competitive and the symbol of job creation and economic development to the rest of the country."
